หินอ่อนไวท์คาร์ราร่า หนึ่งในวัสดุชั้นเยี่ยมจากอิตาลีที่กรมสมเด็จพระเทพทรงเลือกมาบุพระอุโบสถวัดโสธรด้วยพระองค์เอง

ด้วยแนวคิดของคณะทำงานที่ต้องการให้พระอุโบสถหลังนี้อยู่คู่ประเทศ จึงไม่มีการใช้วัสดุผุพังจำพวกไม้หรือผ้าแม้แต่ชิ้นเดียว ผนังพระอุโบสถจึงไม่มีการทาสี เพื่อจะได้ไม่ต้องซ่อมบำรุงหรือทาสีใหม่ จึงบุด้วยหินอ่อนทั้งหมด

ความพิเศษอย่างยิ่งของหินอ่อนที่นำมาบุกับผนังของพระอุโบสถวัดโสธรทั้งหลังนั้น ก็ด้วยความเป็นหินอ่อนจากเทือกเขาเดียวกันกับพระที่นั่งอนันตสมาคมและพระอุโบสถวัดเบญจมบพิตรดุสิตาวนารามที่สร้างในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5  โดยคณะทำงานก่อสร้างพระอุโบสถวัดโสธร ได้นำเข้าหินอ่อนมาจากเหมืองหินอ่อนที่ดีที่สุดของประเทศอิตาลี และหินอ่อนที่บุรอบผนังพระอุโบสถวัดโสธรนี้ สมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี (พระราชอิสริยยศในขณะนั้น)เสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปทรงเลือกสีและลายหินอ่อนไวท์คาร์ราร่าถึงเหมืองในประเทศอิตาลีด้วยพระองค์เอง โดยมิได้ทรงย่นย่อต่อความหนาวเย็นภายในเหมือง รวมถึงความสกปรกเปรอะเปื้อนของน้ำปูนที่กระเด็นมาต้องฉลองพระองค์แม้แต่น้อย นับเป็นกรุณาธิคุณอย่างหาที่สุดมิได้

เซรามิก น้ำทองแท้ หนึ่งในศิลปกรรมทรงคุณค่าของช่อระกาหางหงส์พระอุโบสถวัดโสธร

เมื่อพูดถึง ศิลปกรรมตกแต่งส่วนต่างๆของพระอุโบสถ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นช่อระกา หางหงส์ ซุ้มหน้าต่าง กระจัง หรือทุกๆชิ้นในตัวพระอุโบสถที่เป็นสีทองอร่ามนั้น ขอให้ทุกท่านทราบว่า นั่นคือ ทองคำแท้ ไม่ใช่ทาสีทอง โดยทุกชิ้นทำจากเซรามิกที่เผาด้วยความร้อนสูงแล้วเคลือบด้วยน้ำทองแท้ น้ำทองแท้ที่เคลือบลงไป ใช้กรรมวิธีหลอมละลายทองคำให้เป็นน้ำ แล้วเอาน้ำทองที่ได้จากการหลอมแทรกเข้าไปในเนื้อเซรามิก ดังนั้น เมื่อมองไปด้านบนของพระอุโบสถ เราจึงได้เห็นความสวยงามอร่ามตาขนาดนี้

              แต่กว่าจะได้ความสวยงามขนาดนี้นั้น ทางคณะทำงาน ต้องนำเซรามิกมาปั้น – เผา – แล้วทุบ ปั้น-เผา-แล้วทุบ อยู่หลายรอบ เนื่องจากในยุค 2535 – 2542 ยังไม่เคยมีการทำเซรามิกเคลือบน้ำทองแท้ๆมาก่อน การปั้นขึ้นลาย ก็ทำแบบขนาดเท่าของจริง 1:1 นอกจากชิ้นใดที่มีขนาดใหญ่มากๆ ก็จะทำเป็นชิ้นส่วนประกอบกัน

              ในระหว่างการเผาเซรามิกด้วยความร้อนสูงนั้น หากบางชิ้นงานบิดเบี้ยวไม่สมประกอบ ก็ต้องทุบทำลายทิ้ง แล้วก็ทำขึ้นใหม่ เพราะเป็นการทำไปศึกษาไป จึงใช้ทั้งเวลา เงิน และทองมากพอสมควร
